HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
West Memphis at No. 6 Wynne
West Memphis has won two straight in the series, including last year 21-0. The Blue Devils lost the season opener to Little Rock Central 24-18 and trailed Blytheville 17-7 in the first half last week before rallying for a 34-31 victory.
Senior running back Cedric Loving paces the Blue Devils with 32 carries this fall for 175 yards, while West Memphis rotates sophomore Tevin Carter and senior Owens McConnell at quarterback. The Blue Devil defense held Blytheville to 101 yards rushing a week ago when the Chickasaws controlled the line of scrimmage.
Wynne led two-time defending Class 4A champion Arkadelphia 20-14 at halftime a week ago before senior all-state QB Holden Parker left the game with leg cramps. Arkadelphia outscored Wynne 37-11 in the second half. Wynne's undersized defense starts four sophomores “and we have growing pains,” Coach Van Paschal says. Senior Marterius Ross shifted from tight end to fullback in the summer and rushed for 275 yards. Junior slotback Jayden Potter ran for 114 yards against Arkadelphia. Wynne center Hunter Williams takes ownership of the line and sophomore Tyrell Johnson has blossomed since sliding from fullback to guard in the summer. “We can stay in it, if we execute our triple option,” Paschal says.
