HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
Class 7A No. 3 West Memphis at No. 5 Marion
West Memphis has won 30 consecutive conference games and eyes its eighth straight league title this fall. The Blue Devils feature a deep backfield with seniors Nathaniel Henderson (182 yards, one touchdown) and Kavon Lewis (6.2 yards per carry) and juniors Taz Watson (438 yards, six TDs) and Kendall Allen (140 yards, one TD). Watson ran 17 times for a career-high 227 yards and four TDs in last week's 57-19 win over Little Rock Hall. West Memphis' passing game has improved this year, coach Lanny Dauksch says, with senior quarterback Jerone "Boo" Roberts (200 yards passing, three TDs) throwing to senior receivers Cody Dauksch (140 yards, three TDs) and Jaylin Sloan (100 yards, one score).
Marion lost to West Memphis 28-20 a year ago in its best performance against the Blue Devils since 2006. The Patriots return 18 starters from that team, including senior Tre Franklin and junior Rashad Boyd, who power the Patriots' dynamic rushing attack along with sophomore Corey Garrett. "They're running over everybody," Dauksch says. "Statistically, they're the best running team in the state." Franklin ran 24 times for 125 yards and three TDs in last week's 36-31 win over Searcy. Franklin has rushed for 812 yards and 16 TDs this season. "He's hard to tackle and runs with his pads low. His yards after contact are probably more than before contact."
