UNSANCTIONED CHAMPIONSHIP
Corning handily defeated Subiaco Academy 52-8 to claim the program’s first state championship last Friday at Corning's Bobcat Stadium. The victory was extra meaningful for head coach Farrell Shelton, who notched his 200th career win.
The Bobcats led 38-0 at the half behind Jakob Cox (11-108 receiving, 2 TDs; rushing TD; 8 tackles; INT. return for TD). Haydon Cox (11-61 rushing, 2 TDs) also contributed for Corning. Senior quarterback Seth Smith completed 14 of 21 passes for 165 yards and the 2 TDs to Jakob Cox.
Corning outscored the opposition 424-118 and went unbeaten against in-state competition, the lone blemish coming at the hands of Tunica Academy (Miss.).
SANCTIONED TEAMS
Top-ranked Strong (5-0) is idle this week but has already secured the North conference title. The Bulldogs have notched one win via forfeit but have outscored opponents 200-36 in the games they have played.
HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
NO. 5 WOODLAWN (6-2) at No. 6 Brinkley (4-2): The South No. 2 seed is on the line when the Bears and Tigers square off at Tiger Stadium. Brinkley was idle last week, but Woodlawn won its second consecutive game, 66-28, over Marvell. Garrett Weatherford (12-130 rushing, 2 TDs) led the way, with Ethan Adair and Aden Moore combining for 6 touchdowns. The Tigers, led by junior Christian WIlliams, aim to gain some momentum heading into postseason play after a tough loss to top-ranked Strong on Oct. 25.
WEEK 10 PREDICTIONS (favored team in ALL CAPS and highlighted)
Guy-Perkins (1-6) at NO. 2 MIDLAND (8-0) Midland continued rolling through its regular season schedule with a 52-36 victory over South Side Bee Branch that secured the school's first conference championship. Chase Rascoe (166 rushing yards, 3 TDs) and Brayden York (144 rushing, 3 TDs) paced Midland’s ground attack against South Side.
