HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 13 Earle at No. 22 Hoxie
Earle scores 35 points per game but managed just 12 last week in a two-point loss at Harrisburg. The Bulldogs committed two turnovers and were penalized for more than 200 yards. Assistant coach Carl Miller says Earle will focus on improving fundamentals this week as it prepares for Hoxie, which "doesn't make too many mistakes." Senior Robert Marshall (1,275 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns) and sophomore Autry Allen (more than 600 yards rushing and nine TDs) are two of Earle's playmakers. Junior linebacker Shakur Johnson leads the Bulldog defense with 70 tackles and 12 sacks this fall. The Bulldogs beat Hoxie 30-22 last year.
Hoxie coach Tom Sears says he's very impressed with how Earle flies to the ball on defense. "They're very aggressive, athletic and explosive. You're not going to out-run them." Hoxie junior quarterback Sebastian Irvin has accounted for 1,439 yards (1,048 rushing, 9.7 yards per carry) and 16 TDs this fall. Inside linebacker Thomas Kingsland (one of six seniors) paces the Mustang defense with 57 tackles (four for loss), while junior safety Tyler Hall (48 stops) leads the secondary with seven pass break-ups. Hoxie's two losses were to Class 5A Greene County Tech (48-20) and Class 4A Highland (38-15).
