HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 14 Atkins at No. 9 Paris
This game likely decides the No. 2 and 3 playoff seeds in the 4-3A, placing both teams in the top half of the bracket with home games in the first round.
Atkins rebounded from a 20-point loss at Charleston Week 6 with a 49-20 win over Mansfield last week. The Red Devils led 35-13 at halftime after senior playmaker Trey Bennett returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown and ran 5 yards for a score. Junior quarterback Ty Ennis threw two TD passes, including a 39-yarder to Bennett. "They're extremely versatile on offense and physical on defense," Paris coach Bryan Hutson says. "This group in ninth grade was one of the best junior high teams I've ever seen."
Paris averages a league-high 41 points per game and has beaten Lavaca and Cedarville by a combined 109-6 since losing to Charleston 13-7 Week 5. Senior running back Mason Koenigseder has 95 carries for 1,000 yards (10.5 yards per carry) and 15 TDs this year. Senior QB Josh Parsons has developed into a dual-threat with improved speed, Hutson says, and has evolved into "a true leader." Senior tight end/linebacker Austin Bridges blocks and catches well and has "really stepped up his game on defense," the coach says.
