Class 4A Rankings, Picks and Notes, Week 9, 2023 (Part 2)

POTTSVILLE (5-4; 4-3) at Dover (2-6; 0-6): Pottsville has won 12 of its 16 meetings with Dover since starting the program in 2004. Pottsville has lost 3 straight games by a combined 20 points. Junior QB Miller Mahan played well, along with junior RB Tate Cobb and junior slotback Colby Stephenson. Dover hasn't won a conference game since beating Waldron Week 10, 2018.
Clinton (6-2; 4-2) at LAMAR (6-2; 4-2): The winner sews up a playoff spot. Lamar trounced Hall Steam Academy 39-0 last Thursday behind QB Caleb Green (5-10-52-2 passing; 10-148-1 rushing). Caiden Woods ran 6 times for 57 yards and 1 TD, and Brandon Gice led the defense with 14 tackles and 1 interception. Clinton slipped past Pottsville 48-41 a week ago. Senior Zane Widener (20-107-4 rushing; 2-58-1 receiving) played well on offense, along with fullback Zack Hunt Gonzalez (12-84-1), RB Rylan Jones (7-64) and QB Brodie Dufrene (5-6-121-2 passing).
BAUXITE (5-3; 4-2) at Hall Steam (2-6; 1-5): Bauxite moved into a 3-way tie for 2nd place in the conference with last week's 43-28 win over Mayflower. The Miners and 2 other teams could be tied for 1st place with a win this week. Freshman QB Eli Perry (14-18-103-1 passing; 11-23 rushing) and senior RB Chelton Murdock (18-164-1) helped control the clock. Perry completed passes to 7 different players, including 5 for 33 yards to junior Tony Fox. Hall Steam lost to Lamar 39-0 last week.
H.G. HASKELL (4-4; 3-3) at Mayflower (5-3; 3-3): Haskell didn't play last week, while Mayflower lost by 15 points to Bauxite. The winner will be in a 3-way tie for the No. 4 playoff seed. Haskell didn't play last week, and 2 weeks ago the Cardinals held Hall Steam to less than 100 yards in a 42-14 victory. Mayflower senior QB Frankie Fennell played well last week at Bauxite.

Nashville (6-2; 3-1) at MALVERN (5-2; 3-0): These teams played twice last year, with Malvern winning both (48-34 in Week 9, 56-37 in the semifinals). Malvern needs to win its final 2 regular-season games to win its first conference title since 1997. The Leopards were off last week, and 2 weeks ago mauled Mena 57-14. Senior RB Jalen Dupree (15-216-4) played one half of the blowout over Mena, while Dyelon Caradine starred at receiver (6-192-2). Senior LBs Romere Bennett and Angel Perez combined for 20 tackles in the first half. Nashville has won 3 straight conference games — beating Mena, Ashdown, and Waldron by a combined 153-46. Senior RB Tre Hopkins (6-100-3) and sophomore Tucker Dixon (13-168-1) powered a rushing attack that averaged 12 yards per play in last week's 55-6 win over Waldron.
Mena (4-4; 0-3) at ASHDOWN (3-5; 1-3): Ashdown has won 13 of the past 14 meetings over Mena. But Ashdown is struggling after consecutive losses to Malvern, Nashville and Arkadelphia by a combined 132-34. Ashdown committed 5 turnovers and trailed Arkadelphia 35-0 in the second quarter last week before losing 42-0. Mena snapped a 3-game losing streak with last week's 37-13 nonconference win over Class 3A Fouke.
ARKADELPHIA (4-3; 3-0) at 3A Fordyce (4-4, 3-1): This is a nonconference game. Fordyce had 474 yards offense (381 rushing, 93 passing) in last week's 29-28 loss to Harmony Grove Ouachita County. Arkadelphia forced 5 turnovers in last week's 42-0 win over Ashdown. QB Cade McBride (10-13-185-4 passing; 10-56 rushing) and Kyle Reed (6-82 rushing) powered Arkadelphia's ground game a week ago, while Nykkison Wimberly returned a fumble for a TD.
OPEN Waldron (0-8; 0-3)

WARREN (8-0; 6-0) at Helena (0-8; 0-6): Warren has won 4 of its 5 meetings with Helena since the Cougars joined the league in 2019. Warren won the Saline River Shootout last week over Monticello 42-21. RB Jordyn Ingram (17-105-2), freshman QB Jackson Denton (16-26-200-3), junior WRs Antonio Jordan (6-91-2), and Neon'dre Thomas (4-54-1) played well for Warren. Helena has lost 15 consecutive games.
CROSSETT (5-3; 4-2) at Dumas (5-3; 3-3): Crossett has won 8 of the past 11 meetings with Dumas, including 35-7 last season. Crossett blanked Helena 49-0 a week ago. Senior QB Max Brooks (11-13-247-5 passing; 5-45-1 rushing) and senior WR Taylin Paskel (3-142-2) sparked the offense. Dumas dropped a heartbreaker at McGehee last week 45-32. Senior QB Joseph Jones (16-30-286-5 passing; 2-9 rushing) and junior WR Teshawn Henderson (3-126-2) played well on offense, while senior Jerry McGehee (12 tackles) led the defense.
DEWITT (7-1; 5-1) at McGehee (5-2; 3-3): DeWitt's open date came at a great time (lost 39-23 to Warren in Week 7). The Dragons OL, RB Korri Graham, and kicker David Pena played well against Warren, coach Tommy Cody says. McGehee edged past Dumas last week 45-32. Senior RB Jaykaylin Easter (15-161-3), QB Ky Bell (9-145 rushing) and SirKamryn Jefferson (17-113-2) were 100-yard rushers for the Owls.
Star City (1-8; 1-5) at MONTICELLO (5-3; 4-2): Star City will miss the playoffs a year after winning 10 games and finishing as league runner-up. The Bulldogs are open in Week 10 after this week's season finale. They lost 42-26 to Hamburg last week. Caleb Williams ran for 2 TDs, while Morgan Leopard made 14 tackles. Monticello's 4-game win streak was halted by Warren last week 42-21. Senior Ja'Quayvuis Rhodes (11-61-1 rushing; 2-9 receiving) and Jon'tavion Jackson (23-138 rushing) played well for the Billies.
