HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 14 Mineral Springs at No. 2 Spring Hill
Spring Hill outscored Gurdon 36-34 (OT) Week 7 and Horatio 42-40 last week with Sonic Super Team RB/LB Rodrea Jones (high ankle sprain) playing very little offense. But senior fullback Colton Capps (6-2, 200) has rushed for more than 700 yards behind an offensive line that averages 230 pounds per man. Spring Hill senior linebackers Kellen Hamilton, Kevin Aaron and sophomore Carter Yocom have played well. Mineral Springs counters with speedy sophomore RB Rashad Williams (1,608 yards), senior QB Jason Ware, senior playmakers Aaron McDonald and Dominique Lampkins and junior Trevor Lewis. All can score from any where on the field at any time. Junior LB Jayco Walton (21 tackles last week vs. Foreman) and sophomore LB Derrick Muldrow (15 stops last week) spearhead the Hornet defense. Common opponent: Horatio beat Mineral Springs 35-26. Spring Hill beat Horatio 42-40.
Hooten's Arkansas Football TV show will feature highlights of the game at 11 a.m. Saturday on Fox 16 and next week on hootens.com

LAST WEEK
Hootens.com correctly picked 22 of 24 games (92 percent) involving Class 2A teams. HAFR is 183-46 (80 percent) for the season.
WEEK 9 PREDICTIONS (favored team in ALL CAPS followed by point spread)
3-2A
Salem at AUGUSTA (14): Salem has not won a league game; Augusta has dropped three straight games. Augusta senior tailback Ishma Clark did not play last week in a 34-16 loss a Cedar Ridge and his status is unknown for this week, Augusta coach Roosevelt Turner said.
Cross County at WALNUT RIDGE (6): Walnut Ridge has emerged as the 3-2A's most consistent team, making the fewest mistakes and turnovers. Cross County, paced by senior RB Blake Veasley, is fighting for its playoff life and plays host to improving Cedar Ridge next week.
E. POINSETT COUNTY (10) at Marked Tree: Sophomore RB Darius Ivy paced Marked Tree last week with 63 yards in a 28-6 loss at No. 11 Bigelow. EPC's Byron Ford (823 yards and 10 TDs) and Darius Barnes (800 yards and 10 TDs) spearhead a rushing offense that averages 8.2 yards per attempt. Junior QB Darius Barnes has completed 45 of 89 passes for 791 yards and 10 TDs with five interceptions. Junior linebacker A.J. Turner leads the Warriors with 99 tackles.
Quitman at CEDAR RIDGE (2): Surging Cedar Ridge upset Augusta 34-16 last week.
MCCRORY is open.
4-2A
Mountainburg at MAGAZINE (12): No. 3 Magazine should cross final hurdle to repeat as 4-2A champion. As the 4-2A top seed, Rattlers get a first-round bye and the 8-2A No. 2 seed (possibly No. 4 Strong) in the second round. Mountainburg may slip to the fourth seed, sending the Dragons to South Arkansas for a likely first-round exit.
UNION CHRISTIAN (23) at Decatur: Union Christian stays alive for a playoff berth. Senior Mohammed Matlock and junior Matt Calloway combined for 227 yards last week in a 48-0 win over winless Hartford.
Poyen at DANVILLE (35): Danville running to playoffs for the 33rd time in school history and will likely play host the 8-2A's fourth seed, probably Parkers Chapel or Junction City.
HACKETT (20) at J.C. Westside: Hackett has ripped off five consecutive wins to position itself as the No. 3 playoff seed.
Hartford a WESTERN YELL (14): Western Yell keeps Hartford winless.
5-2A
MOUNTAIN PINE (35) at Two Rivers: Mountain Pine heads back to the playoffs for the fifth year in a row, 21st time in school history.
MAGNET COVE (4) at Conway Christian: Magnet Cove failed its first road test Week 7 at Bigelow (29-22), and its speedy defense now faces Conway Christian's senior-laden backfield of QB Kirby Powell, RB Adam Ragland and RB Bates Isom. Last week at Hector, Powell attempted five passes and three went for TDs, while Ragland and Isom combined for 142 yards. Conway Christian travels to Bigelow for the regular-season finale.
BIGELOW (42) at Hector: Bigelow was predictably flat last week in a 28-6 homecoming (non-conference) victory over Marked Tree after knocking off Magnet Cove 29-22 Week 7. Bigelow is still in great shape to claim the 5-2A top seed and a first-round bye.
Poyen at DANVILLE (35): Danville running to playoffs for the 33rd time in school history and will likely play host the 8-2A's fourth seed, probably Parkers Chapel or Junction City.
Quitman at CEDAR RIDGE (2): Surging Cedar Ridge upset Augusta 34-16 last week.
6-2A
HAZEN (6) at England: England knocked off Clarendon 39-36 last week after Clarendon had beaten Hazen 33-30 Week 7, setting up the biggest game in England in a long time. Hazen's power running game, featuring junior RB Matt Tenison, will test an England defense that starts two first-year linemen, sophomore linebacker Jordan Ross (85 tackles, one INT, three FRs) and junior linebacker Lucas Hargraves (65 tackles). Senior RB Mark Hatton paces England with 1,400 yards and 19 TDs. Senior QB/LB Josh Anderson (60 tackles) started at center as a sophomore. Hooten's Arkansas Football TV show will feature highlights of the game at 11 a.m. Saturday on Fox 16.
CARLISLE (45) at Hughes: The Carlisle team that simply ran over Des Arc two weeks ago should earn the league's top playoff seed and rumble to quarterfinals, at least. Carlisle plays host to Hazen in the regular-season finale.
Marvell at DES ARC (48): Des Arc's losses are to No. 9 Parkers Chapel, No. 6 Carlisle and Class 3A No. 5 Harding Academy. The Eagles play host to Clarendon in the regular-season finale.
CLARENDON (32) at Palestine-Wheatley: Clarendon's Jackson duo, QB Jamarlin and RB Jamen, could give the 7-2A champion fits in the first round of the playoffs.
7-2A
Mineral Springs at SPRING HILL (1): See Game of the Week.
Foreman at DIERKS (2): The Outlaws generate enough offense to get past Foreman, which gave up 309 yards on 14 carries last week to Mineral Springs sophomore RB Rashad Williams.
Gurdon at MURFREESBORO (6): If Murfreesboro and Spring Hill win this week, they would play Week 10 for the league title. Murfreesboro torched Mount Ida last week for 454 yards and 55 points. Senior QB Matthew Motley ran for 138 yards (9.2 ypc) and completed 13 of 22 passes for 233 yards and three TDs. Hooten's Arkansas Football TV show will feature highlights of the game at 11 a.m. Saturday on Fox 16 and next week on hootens.com
HORATIO (24) at Mount Ida: Horatio knocked off Mineral Springs 35-26 two weeks ago but failed on a two-point conversion attempt late last week in a 42-40 loss to Spring Hill. Horatio's all-league receiver Isauro Gonzalez (6-3, 180) has caught 41 passes for 743 yards and 10 TDs, including seven receptions for 155 yards and three TDs last week. Mount Ida allowed 454 yards last week in a 55-14 loss at Murfreesboro.
8-2A
Parkers Chapel at BEARDEN (21): Bearden junior quarterback Defonta Lowe running wild (five carries for 182 yards vs. Hampton) and passing with accuracy from 10 to 50 yards. Bearden's defense solidified when coaches moved senior Marcie Berry (6-0, 220) from tackle to linebacker and senior Alan Holmes (6-1, 190) back to outside linebacker. After losing to Class 3A No. 6 Camden Harmony Grove 34-14 and defeating Woodlawn 21-18 Week 2, Bearden's starting defense has allowed six total points to five opponents.
WOODLAWN (18) at Hermitage: Woodlawn must beat winless Hermitage to keep ultra-slim playoff hopes alive.
Norphlet at STRONG (13): The No. 2 playoff seed hangs in the balance. Strong will be favored next week at Woodlawn, while Norphlet plays host to top-ranked Bearden.
Hampton at JUNCTION CITY (12): Junction City blew past Dermott 34-0 last week but lost two of three fumbles. The typically explosive Dragons have lost 15 turnovers this fall, but the defense has forced 15 turnovers.
DERMOTT is open.
