HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 11 Camden Harmony Grove at No. 13 Fordyce
Harmony Grove has won its past four games by an average of 29 points since losing to Rison 27-0 in the conference-opener. The Hornets have managed to stay healthy over the past month. Senior Dalton McKelvin (1,452 total yards, 12 touchdowns this year) has emerged as a true dual-threat quarterback this fall, Harmony Grove coach Tony Chambers says. "Everybody knew about him running the ball last year but he's throwing the ball a lot better." McKelvin generated 264 yards and four TDs in last week's 34-19 win over Smackover. He averages 40 yards per punt return and has recorded 25 tackles and five interceptions this year. "He's the best QB in the conference," Fordyce coach Tim Rodgers says. Senior Kyle Wallingsford, junior Brett James and sophomore Zamarquus Gentry are playing well at the receiver positions, Chambers says. Senior fullback Laverne Hicks ran for 237 yards and two TDs two weeks ago in a 26-13 win at Lafayette County.
Fordyce features a solid set of skill players, too. Junior QB Cole Johnson has completed 89 of 133 passes (67 percent) for 1,468 yards and 17 TDs this fall. Junior running back Mark Grice has 70 carries for 446 yards and six TDs, while sophomore Larry Buckley has 65 carries for 384 yards and seven scores. Senior receiver Markell Bulliner has 19 catches for 406 yards and six TDs, while classmate Vetorie Broughton averages 29.7 yards per catch. "They're loaded with unbelievable athletes," Chambers says. The Redbugs dressed 25 players in last week's 62-0 win over Drew Central. Five starters were out with injuries, including Grice, Buckley and junior guard/linebacker Xavier Warner (48 tackles this season). All but Warner (separated shoulder) could start this week, Rodgers says. Fordyce committed seven turnovers two weeks ago in a 31-14 loss at Smackover. "It's just a matter of who plays mistake-free ‘ball," Chambers says. "We didn't turn it over against Smackover."
