HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 4 Rison at No. 7 Fordyce
Rison, looking for its first outright league title since joining Class 3A in 2006, already owns a share of the 6-3A crown after Fordyce lost 13-9 at Camden Harmony Grove last week. The Redbugs can force a three-way tie for first place, but must beat Rison by at least five points to claim the No. 1 playoff seed. Fordyce coach Tim Rodgers says this rivalry game is a lot more important now than it has ever been. "One thing we never have to doubt when playing Rison is their effort. They're always going to play hard, sound fundamental football. We have to do everything right to win. They're not going to beat themselves."
Rison has beaten Fordyce the past two years, including a one-point victory at Fordyce a year ago. Rison senior RB Raphael Caldwell has rushed for more than 1,400 yards this fall. Junior playmaker Quanterio Heath (6-2, 190) has been offered a scholarship by the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The last Rison junior offered a scholarship was former Arkansas State University standout and Minnesota Viking safety Tyrell Johnson. The Wildcats, led by interior linemen James Cranford and Patrick Abeyta, give up nine points per game (best in Class 3A).
Fordyce junior Kentrell Simmons intercepted a pass in the end zone during the fourth quarter of last week's four-point loss at Harmony Grove. On the ensuing drive, the Redbugs were stopped short on fourth down in Harmony Grove territory. After the Hornets scored, Fordyce had a chance to win but threw an interception in the end zone. Senior RB Dexter Walker has rushed for 1,124 yards and 19 TDs this year, while classmates Darius Matthews and Jeffrey Highsmith have combined for almost 900 yards. Senior tackle Jerron Rayford leads Fordyce with more than 75 tackles.
