HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 1 Greenwood at No. 2 Camden Fairview
These teams have been ranked No. 1 and No. 2 since Hooten's Arkansas Football Magazine hit newsstands in June. Greenwood has beaten Camden Fairview three times in the playoffs the past five years, including 24-21 in the 2007 semifinals and 36-35 in last year's state title game.
Greenwood averages 45 points a game, despite sitting the starters for the second half in most conference games. Senior quarterback Hayden Smith has completed 186 of 242 passes (77.9 percent) for 2,661 yards and 34 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Smith caught the game-winning two-point conversion pass in last year's title game. Senior Justin Sunde has rushed for 1,055 yards and 17 TDs and caught 48 passes for 434 yards and three scores. Junior receiver Drew Morgan paces the Bulldogs with 66 catches for 1,139 yards and 20 scores. Senior Adam McFain has kicked 72 of 75 extra points and nine of 13 field goals this fall. "Greenwood doesn't beat themselves," said Camden Fairview coach Buck James. "They don't turn it over and make very few mistakes."
The Bulldog defense gives up just 13 points a game. Senior linebacker Brandon Boerjan has recorded more than 100 tackles, while senior noseguard Howie Cox "gives us a force at noseguard," coach Rick Jones said. "He's physical and occupies a lot of space."
Camden Fairview counters by averaging 43 points a game. Senior QB Austin Booth sprained his ankle in Week 11, but played in the first half of last week's 55-17 blowout over Beebe. Booth has completed 99 of 148 passes (67 percent) for 1,384 yards and 14 TDs this year. Backup QB Jerry Moorehead has completed 17 of 22 passes for 288 yards and four TDs this year, nailing five of seven passes for 175 yards and three scores last week. Moorehead has rushed for 463 yards and six TDs this fall. Senior Derek Keaton, who has committed to Kansas, has rushed for more than 800 yards and caught 27 passes for 338 yards and two scores. Senior Dominque Reed has 38 catches for 885 yards and 12 TDs. Cardinal junior linebacker Aaron Wynn set a school record with 29 tackles against Beebe. Wynn has 126 tackles this year, including 19 behind the line of scrimmage.
Comparing scores: Greenwood beat Morrilton 41-17 in Week 5 and CAC 42-7 in Week 11. Camden Fairview beat CAC 48-20 in Week 5 and Morrilton 28-21 in Week 11.
Other Semifinal Game
No. 4 White Hall at No. 3 Batesville
Batesville returns to the semifinals for the second straight season and for the fourth time in nine years after blasting Greenbrier 16-6 a week ago. The two-time defending 5A East champions stymie opponents, giving up just 15 points a game. The Pioneers recorded seven sacks against Greenbrier, including two for 18 yards in losses on back-to-back plays by senior linebacker Hunter Vinson. Senior safety Cody Vaughn paces the Pioneers with more than 120 tackles, while senior end Ryan Coles makes plays up front. "Our defense is playing well, playing fast," said Batesville coach Dave King. "I don't know if I've seen a group play harder."
Batesville, which averages 38 points weekly, controls the clock with its running attack. The Pioneers held the ball for more than 31 minutes last week. Junior Jordan Childress has rushed for 1,922 yards and 25 TDs this fall, while cousin and classmate Emprea Childress has rushed for more than 500 yards.
White Hall has won nine straight games and outscores opponents by an average of 31-16. But the Bulldogs haven't been to the semifinals since 1991. "It's new for everyone around here," said coach Mike Vaughn. "Nothing compares to experience in the playoffs." White Hall senior quarterback Nathan Lee operates the Spread scheme effectively, while the Bulldogs use a power formation near the goal line, giving the ball to senior Tim Cook. Cook (4.4 speed) scored five TDs in last week's 38-21 victory over Hot Springs Lakeside. Senior receiver Jeremy Sprinkle tallied 120 yards last week and has more than 600 yards this fall. Cook, at linebacker, has made 160 tackles while defensive end Sprinkle has recorded 12 sacks.
Comparing scores: Batesville beat Blytheville 56-21 in Week 8 and West Helena 40-6 in Week 11. White Hall beat West Helena 42-0 in Week 8 and Blytheville 37-20 in Week 11.
