HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 9 Magnet Cove at No. 4 Spring Hill
Magnet Cove goes on the road for the ninth time this season. Eight seniors start on a defense that prides itself in stopping the run. They will be severely tested by Spring Hill senior running backs Colton Capps (6-2, 200) and Rodrea Jones (6-1, 215). Spring Hill advanced to the state semifinals last year before losing at Bearden 40-6. Magnet Cove last reached the third round of the playoffs in 2000 before losing to Charleston 48-7. Magnet Cove reached the state title game in 1972, losing to Farmington 20-6. It won the 1970 state title, defeating Luxora 14-8 in two overtimes. (See more below)

TOP HALF OF THE BRACKET
Carlisle at MAGAZINE (6): This is rematch of a 2009 second-round game that Magazine won 30-16 for its biggest win in school history to that point. Magazine employs an ultra-quick defense that allows just 11 points per game, and its starters have allowed even fewer than that. Junior LB Josh Dority (4.6 speed) paces the Rattlers with more than 100 tackles. Junior CB Cory Chambers has intercepted nine passes, and he leads the Rattlers in receiving with 549 yards. Junior QB Ryan Chambers has completed 50 percent of his passes for 950 yards and 15 TDs. Ryan Chambers averages 7.6 yards per rushing attempt. Senior Chang Yang (4-11, 125) has rushed for almost 400 yards. Senior Long Yang has rushed for more than 400 yards. In the second half of last week's 34-26 win over Strong, Magazine fumbled twice inside the Strong 10-yard line and had a TD run negated by a holding penalty. Carlisle's huge line cleared the way for 447 rushing yards last week in a 34-28 OT win over East Poinsett County. Senior FB Ben Walker ran for 104 yards, including a 49-yard TD. Senior D.J. Miller (ankle) ran 14 times for 97 yards and a TD before leaving early in the third quarter with a sore ankle. Miller ran for 119 yards and a TD two weeks ago, mostly in the first half vs. Union Christian. The Bison rolled up 394 yards in that 24-12 win over Union Christian. Carlisle held Union Christian to 23 rushing yards, but allowed 126 passing yards and two TDs. Last week, EPC junior quarterback Darius Barnes burned Carlisle for 226 total yards and three TDs.
MAGNET COVE (2) at Spring Hill: Magnet Cove's balanced attack features sophomore QB Hunter Linam, who completed an efficient eight of 11 pass attempts for 111 yards and three TDs three weeks ago in a 40-8 first-round blowout of Augusta. Last week, Linam completed nine of 17 passes for three TDs in a 41-22 win at McCrory. Senior all-state athlete Josh Scott (5-10, 210) makes plays as a place-kicker, deep-snapper, guard and linebacker. Scott (87 tackles) has intercepted four passes, returning one for TD against Two Rivers and another 45 yards for a TD Week 4 in a 34-21 win at Parkers Chapel. Junior Jeff Pinkston paces a balanced running attack with 1,170 yards (11 ypc) and 15 TDs. Senior RB Taylor Bray has rushed for 891 yards and 13 TDs. The Panthers have blistered Quitman (54-28), Conway Christian (42-8), Two Rivers (42-0), Augusta (40-8) and McCrory (41-22) since a Week 7 hiccup (29-22 loss) at Bigelow where they committed six turnovers, losing two fumbles inside their 15-yard line and two inside the Bigelow 20. No. 2 Spring Hill allowed 34, 40, 41, 26, and 56 in the five weeks before last week. But last week the Bears handled Hackett 56-21 with the exception of three big plays: a 54-yard TD pass, a 24-yard TD pass and a 67-yard TD run. Senior FB Colton Capps (6-2, 200) and senior Rodrea Jones (6-1, 215) combined for 375 yards and four TDs in the 56-21 win over Hackett. Two weeks ago, Jones ran for 222 yards and six TDs in a 69-56 win over Clarendon. Spring Hill amassed 665 yards of total offense. Jones (ankle) did not play Week 10 in the 35-26 win over Murfreesboro, but the Bears still rolled up 464 rushing yards with junior Routon Hendrix running for 220 yards (14.7 ypc) and two TDs.
BOTTOM HALF OF THE BRACKET
BEARDEN (21) at Bigelow: No. 8 Bigelow topped Magnet Cove 29-22 Week 7 to claim the 5-2A championship. Senior linebacker Tye Kibbons leads a Bigelow defense that is deceptively fast. Kibbons recorded 17 tackles in the win over Magnet Cove. Bigelow has since whipped Marked Tree (28-6), Hector (41-7), Conway Christian (60-12) and Des Arc (16-13). Bearden leads the state in scoring defense (8.8 ppg), paced by senior LB Dermarcie Berry and Alan Holmes. Junior QB Defonta Lowe smoothly operates Bearden's Single Wing and Spread attacks. Lowe has rushed for 1,324 yards (10 ypc) and 22 TDs and completed 49 of 71 passes for 1,046 yards. Bearden beat Junction City (27-8) last week for the second time this fall to advance. The Bears rolled up 273 yards last week after piling up 317 yards Week 6 in a 35-8 win at Junction City.
Mineral Springs at DANVILLE (13): Mineral Springs sophomore RB Rashad Williams has rushed for 2,212 yards (11.9 ypc). Senior QB Jason Ware is one of the better dual-threat QBs in 2A football, passing for 1,800 yards and 20 TDs and running for 1,439 yards and 21 TDs. Sophomore Derrick Muldrew paces the Hornets with more than 100 tackles. Mineral Springs reaches the quarterfinals for the first time since 2006 when it lost to eventual state champion Jessieville 28-21. Danville lost Week 5 at 4-2A champion Magazine 28-24 but has not been tested since. The Little Johns have allowed just one TD since holding Magazine to 49 yards in the second half of that loss. Senior end Trey Bailey (6-0, 200) paces the Danville defense with 13 sacks and more than 80 tackles. Passing teams that do not double-team Bailey normally pay for it in QB pressures and sacks. The Little Johns are explosive on offense with junior RBs Blake Noakes (535 yards, 6 TDs), Sean Tyra (621 yards, 11 TDs), Jaylen Ester (540 yards, 8 TDs) and Dadrian Ester (231 rushing yards; 232 receiving yards), senior receiver Mike Mims (23 receptions for 510 yards, 7 TDs) and senior place-kicker Ulises Gutierrez (9 of 15 FGs). Gutierrez kicked a 39-yard field goal into the wind two weeks ago in a 52-16 blowout of Norphlet. Noakes has returned six punts for TDs this fall. Noakes ran three times last week for 128 yards and two TDs in a 50-15 blowout of Horatio.
