HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 4 Jonesboro at No. 2 El Dorado
El Dorado has eliminated Jonesboro twice in the playoffs since 2008, including a 38-28 victory in the 2011 semifinals. The Hurricane scored with 7:01 left in the third quarter to tie the game before El Dorado took advantage of two Jonesboro turnovers to pull away. A week later, the Wildcats won their third state title under Coach Scott Reed (70-20 at El Dorado).
El Dorado has won five of its past six games since a 23-20 loss to Texarkana Week 6. Senior quarterback Clayton Waldrum has completed 142 of 274 passes (52 percent) for 2,449 yards and 28 touchdowns with four interceptions this year. Three Wildcats have more than 50 catches, including senior Ty Owens (1,149 yards and 16 TDs). Junior receiver Dadraques Harris leads El Dorado with 66 catches for 653 yards and eight TDs. Sophomore receiver Kawon Love caught three TD passes in last week's 51-34 win over Benton. Senior tackle and Hog commit Bijhon Jackson (6-3, 315) anchors the defensive line. El Dorado carries a plus-22 turnover margin. "They're a typical El Dorado team," Jonesboro coach Randy Coleman says. "They play-action well off the run and have receivers who can make plays. Defensively, they're big up front and are sound on the back end."
Jonesboro held off Lake Hamilton 23-21 last week to advance to the semifinals for the third straight season. The Hurricane led 23-0 at halftime. Sophomore running back Denzel Mitchell ran 13 times for 106 yards and two TDs before re-injuring his ankle. Mitchell (1,391 yards and 11 TDs) will likely sit out this week. Junior RB Darren Veasley should get the start. Senior playmaker D.J. Anderson is still nursing a knee injury after seven weeks of rehabilitation. Senior QB Reed Wingo has thrown 15 TD passes with just one interception over the past six weeks. The Hurricane have not turned the ball over in their past three games. Senior end and Arkansas State commit Chuks Ota (6-1, 295) spearheads the front three. El Dorado coach Scott Reed calls this year's Jonesboro squad the best one he's faced. "Our defensive staff thinks they're as good as we've seen offensively this year. Defensively, they're good up front, physical and tackle well."
