STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
No. 2 Pine Bluff vs. No. 1 Greenwood
Pine Bluff has beaten Little Rock Hall, Benton and Jonesboro to reach the state title game for the second time in four years (lost 27-20 to El Dorado in 2009). Four of the Zebras' eight state titles came in the 1990s, including three in a row from 1993-95. Pine Bluff averages 37 points per game behind senior quarterback Rickey Clements and a pack of playmakers. Clements threw a 64-yard touchdown pass and ran 4 yards for a score in last week's 24-0 win over Jonesboro. He passed for 169 yards and two TDs Week 8 in a 21-6 win over El Dorado. Senior tailback Walter Ashley has 33 carries for 268 yards and three touchdowns the past two weeks. Seniors Kelvin Sergeant and Devarius Rice make plays on both sides of the ball. Pine Bluff has allowed four points per game since a 24-21 win over Bryant.
Greenwood has won 37 games in a row and chases its third straight state title. The Bulldogs dethroned three-time defending state champion El Dorado 42-39 last week. The Bulldogs gave up 508 total yards (343 passing) but their offense could not be stopped. Junior QB Jabe Burgess completed 21 of 24 passes for 201 yards and two TDs. Senior playmaker Drew Morgan caught nine passes for 66 yards and a TD and ran 12 times for 69 yards and three scores. Burgess has completed 205 of 274 passes (75 percent) for 2,720 yards and 33 TDs with three interceptions this year. Morgan leads Greenwood with 79 catches for 1,035 yards and 13 TDs and has 73 carries for 682 yards and 17 scores. Junior Hoyt Smith paces the Bulldogs with 127 carries for 966 yards (7.6 yards per carry) and 12 TDs.
