CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
No. 2 Greenwood vs. No. 1 Camden Fairview
Greenwood makes its first state title game appearance since winning three straight championships from 2005-2007. The Bulldogs have played in seven of the past 15 title games, also winning a state title in 2000. The Bulldogs beat Camden Fairview 24-21 in the 2007 semifinals.
Greenwood has won nine straight games since losing in consecutive weeks to Shiloh Christian and Siloam Springs by a combined 28 points. Senior quarterback Stephen Hogan, who has committed to Arkansas State, has completed 215 of 312 passes (69 percent) for 2,624 yards and 21 touchdowns this fall. Hogan has also rushed for more than 600 yards and 13 scores. Junior running back Justin Sunde wasn't scheduled to play last week with a hip pointer, but rushed for 138 yards and two TDs. Sunde has rushed for 1,419 yards and 18 TDs.
Greenwood's defense played exceptional in last week's 25-point win at Batesville. Batesville ran 26 plays before gaining a first down and finished with just 92 yards in the first half. Senior linebacker Marco Vota has assisted on more than 100 tackles this year, while linebacker Tyler Sandifer has racked up more than 50 stops. "We played lights out at Batesville," said Coach Rick Jones. "Our defense has played well in the playoffs. We've been fortunate with our draw to play teams who like to line up and try to bruise you. But Camden Fairview can cause us some problems because they like to spread the field."
Camden Fairview returns to the championship game for the second straight year. "After last week (13-point win at Watson Chapel) our guys weren't as excited as last year," said Camden Fairview coach Buck James. "They are all business. They really want to win a state championship."
The Cardinals have won four league championships the past five years, winning 50 games during that span. Senior quarterback Brandon Keaton started the final four games of last season, passing for 156 yards and a TD in the state title game. Keaton has developed into a leader this fall, completing 190 of 294 passes for 3,103 yards and 35 TDs, with just seven interceptions. He's also rushed for seven TDs. Brandon's cousin Derek Keaton has caught 57 passes for 932 yards and 13 scores and rushed for 401 yards and 10 TDs. Senior receiver Dominque Reed has caught 50 passes for 945 yards and nine TDs and excels as a blocker on the perimeter.
Senior noseguard Dexter Hudspeth is the only returning defensive starter. He's racked up 59 tackles and three sacks this season. Junior safety Xavier Davis paces Camden Fairview with 125 tackles, five sacks and five interceptions, while senior linebackers Pierre Ross and Fredrick Ross have combined for 186 stops.
