HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 1 Pulaski Academy vs. No. 2 Malvern
Pulaski Academy makes its fifth state title game appearance since 2003. The Bruins beat Rivercrest 64-32 in 2003 and West Helena 35-32 in 2008, but lost to Greenwood 56-55 in 2006 and Shiloh Christian 61-40 a year ago.
Pulaski Academy's 38-28 victory at Class 6A runner-up Lake Hamilton in Week 3 was its closest game of the season. The Bruins beat Dollarway 51-32 a week ago, jumping to a 30-0 first-quarter advantage. Senior quarterback Fredi Knighten passed for 258 yards and two scores and ran for 87 yards and a TD in the first half. Knighten, a finalist for the Farm Bureau Awards Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year, has passed for 4,148 yards and a state-best 61 touchdowns this season.
The Bruins try to cap their perfect season with a rematch against Malvern. The Bruins blasted the Leopards 47-16 in Week 8, holding them to minus-7 yards offense. Pulaski Academy rolled up 487 yards in the first half, as Fredi Knighten completed 20 of 33 passes for 355 yards and five TDs and ran six times for 93 yards and two scores-all in the first half. "It helps that we've played them," said Malvern coach John Fogleman. "I don't think we'll be shocked with anything they do." In the past two years, Pulaski Academy has recovered just one onside kick against Malvern.
Malvern makes its first state title game appearance since winning it all in 1993. The Leopards only losses were at Pulaski Academy and to Class 5A quarterfinalist Hot Springs Lakeside 34-26 in Week 2. Malvern junior QB Austin Warford accounted for six TDs in last week's 49-25 win over Farmington. Warford completed eight of 11 passes for 177 yards and ran for 106 yards. Senior Briseton Barnes hauled in a 60-yard Hail Mary pass on the final play of the first half, which gave Malvern a 35-12 advantage. Senior linebackers Justin James, Trent Block and Quante Walker top Malvern's tackle chart. "We've put some of our best athletes on defense," Fogleman said. "We've got speed on the perimeter."
