CHAMPIONSHIP GAME RECAP
Before moving to Class 6A next season, Greenwood won its sixth state championship since 2000, blasting Batesville 53-11. Batesville led 3-0 in the middle of the first quarter but trailed 38-11 at halftime.
Greenwood senior quarterback Hayden Smith, a finalist for the Farm Bureau Awards Class 5A Offensive player of the year, completed 17 of 25 passes for 319 yards and six touchdowns. Smith completed 76 percent of his passes for 3,089 yards and 41 touchdowns this year. An opposing coach said last week that junior receiver Drew Morgan could start for any team in the state, and Morgan validated the statement in the title game, catching six passes for 161 yards and four TDs. Morgan also returned a kickoff 52 yards and ran one time for 14 yards. Playing linebacker on defense, Morgan made nine tackles, including eight solo stops and two sacks.
Batesville senior Cody Vaughn, a finalist for the Farm Bureau Awards Class 5A Defensive player of the year, led the Pioneers with six solo tackles. Playing QB in some situations, Vaughn completed two passes for 79 yards and Batesville's only TD. Junior Jordan Childress ran 27 times for 77 yards in the title game, and for 2,254 yards this season.
NEXT SEASON
All of Class 5A rejoices with Greenwood's move to Class 6A. Batesville returns starters at 13 positions, including Jordan Childress and his running back/cornerback cousin Emprea Childress. Camden Fairview lost to Greenwood in the playoffs four times in the past five years, including three losses by a combined five points. The Cardinals graduate standouts Derek Keaton and Dominique Reed, but could field a solid defense with tackle Mckinze James (102 tackles, eight sacks) and linebacker Aaron Wynn (136 tackles). Morrilton lost at Camden Fairview in the first round of the playoffs, but the Devil Dogs return Jamar Criswell, who missed half of the season with an ACL injury. Watson Chapel could push for the 2012 state title after failing to reach the semifinals for the first time in four years. The Wildcats rely on speedy running back Jamie Collier and linebacker Josh Harris.
