STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME RECAP
Pulaski Academy claimed its fifth state title since 2003, rallying from a one-point halftime deficit for a 50-30 win over Little Rock McClellan. The Bruins shutout LR McClellan in the second half. The Bruins have won 27 straight games since losing at Highland Park (Texas) 48-42 in last year's opener. They've scored at least 35 points in 39 consecutive games.
Junior running back Jaren Watkins earned title game MVP honors, rushing 17 times for 172 yards, including a 75-yard TD scamper. He also caught three passes for 26 yards. Senior Zack Kelley hauled in a game-best 13 passes for 172 yards and four scores. Versatile senior Tre Bruce completed three passes for 37 yards, rushed seven times for 58 yards and caught eight passes for 86 yards. Sophomore quarterback Layne Hatcher completed 22 of 36 passes for 251 yards and three TDs, but threw a pair of interceptions. Junior noseguard Cameron Fonseca recorded a game-best 12 tackles, while senior linebacker Corbin Witham assisted on 11 stops.
LR McClellan junior Pierre Strong ran 18 times for 123 yards and two scores, while senior fullback Trent Lewis gained 73 yards on a game-high 25 carries. Sophomore cornerback Jaylin Cunningham made nine tackles.
NEXT SEASON
Pulaski Academy returns almost half of its starters, including Hatcher, who set the state sophomore passing record this year with 4,663 yards. Little Rock McClellan returns seven starters on defense, including sophomore linebacker Joe Lewis, who finished with more than 100 tackles this fall. Lewis racked up seven stops and a sack in the title game. Batesville advanced to the semifinals this fall and the Pioneers return QB Zach Griffin and running back Kylan Robinson. Wynne should challenge Batesville for the 5A East title. The Yellowjackets return all their skill players, including receiver/running back Devontai Pounds and QB Luke Chapman. Morrilton should push for the 5A West title, with QB Caleb Canady and receiver Grahm Heidenreich.
