Woods, Gosnell Defense Power Second-Half Surge Past Nettleton

GOSNELL — Mason Woods scored on runs of 86 and 45 yards after halftime, and Gosnell produced three second-half takeaways to defeat Nettleton 47-26 Friday.
The Pirates led 20-18 at halftime before scoring 27 consecutive points. Nettleton running back Calmarre Harrell scored three first-half touchdowns.
After the teams exchanged fumbles, Gosnell opened the scoring on a 9-yard run. Harrell answered from 18 yards out to tie it 6-6.
Gosnell then stopped Nettleton on fourth down at the Pirates’ 9-yard line. Quarterback Jamar Allen connected with Mylan Booker on an 85-yard screen-pass touchdown, completing a 91-yard drive. Harrell’s 25-yard run, capping a four-play, 60-yard scoring drive, evened the score at 12-12 before the first quarter ended.
Allen scored on a 1-yard keeper to begin the second quarter and added the two-point conversion for a 20-12 lead.
Nettleton took over at Gosnell’s 11 following an unsuccessful punt attempt. Harrell scored on the next play, and Gosnell stopped the conversion attempt to retain a two-point advantage.
Nettleton’s defense kept the score there, turning away a first-and-goal possession and later stopping Allen on fourth down. Neither team scored in the final eight minutes before the break.
Jake Riggs intercepted a pass to end Nettleton’s opening third-quarter possession. Woods covered 86 yards on the next play for a 26-18 lead.
Allen added a 26-yard touchdown and another two-point conversion, making it 34-18 with 4:41 left in the third quarter.
Lukas Thigpen returned a fumble for a touchdown with eight minutes remaining. Jeremy Thomas then intercepted a pass on Nettleton’s next possession.
Woods’ 45-yard touchdown run and Adrian Gonzalez’s extra point extended the lead to 47-18 with 4:01 remaining.
Paul Sisk closed the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion with 3:10 left. His kickoff return had given the Raiders possession at Gosnell’s 32-yard line.
