No. 1 BENTONVILLE (2-0) at Hays, Kan. (2-0): Bentonville makes the 856-mile round trip to western Kansas for Hays’ homecoming game. The Tigers were idle last week, but improved to 2-0 with a 20-14 victory over Conway in Week 1, holding the Wampus Cats to 268 yards, forcing 3 turnovers and allowing zero second-half points. Quarterback Evan Canode passed for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns. Canode connected with Nathan Clouston for a 14-yard touchdown before finding Sam Dunn, via deflection, for the deciding 35-yard touchdown. Bentonville’s defense secured the victory by stopping Conway short of the first-down marker on fourth-and-2 during the final minutes. Bentonville has yielded 21 points (10.5 ppg). Hays will have the benefit of its homecoming crowd and energy, but Bentonville owns the stronger defensive resume. The Tigers’ front will limit the Indians’ running game, and Bentonville’s takeaway production and experience in close games provide the difference.
Airline, La., (2-0) at No. 8 PULASKI ACADEMY (1-1): Airline is averaging 44 points in 2 games, but the defense has allowed an average of 33.5 points. Pulaski Academy enters its final nonconference game after a nice 35-33 win over Class 5A Greenwood and a week to rest. The Bruins looked sharp offensively, and QB Caleb Sullivan is settling into a new scheme. Look for plenty of explosive plays from the Bruins with the extra prep time. Pulaski Academy wins the out-of-conference, out-of-state matchup.
Class 6A Little Rock Catholic (0-2) at CABOT (0-2): Catholic’s first 2 games resulted in nearly identical scores with dramatically different results. Class 5A Robinson defeated the Rockets 49-14, but Catholic bounced back the next week, beating Dallas John Paul II 50-13. Cabot dropped a heartbreaker to Class 6A Jonesboro 14-12. In Week 1, Bentonville West defeated the Panthers 45-7. QB Tyce Fletcher totaled nearly 200 yards against the Wolverines. Look for Cabot RB Canon Moore to have a breakout game as the Panthers will establish the run and beat the visiting Rockets.
