Game of the Week
No. 13 Stuttgart at No. 11 Newport
These teams were members of the 2-4A conference from 2006-2007 and met in the playoffs twice in the past 21 years as members of the former Class 4A (Newport won 35-20 in 1999 and 18-14 in 1988). "They aren't the same ole' Stuttgart, but we aren't the same ole' Newport, either" said Greyhound coach Greg Brannon.
Newport played its worst game during Brannon's five-year tenure last week, losing to Trumann 35-21. Newport's other conference setback came at league champion Osceola 56-41 in Week 7. "We overlooked Trumann, and I could see it coming all week," Brannon said. Newport relies on junior running back Artez Brown (1,292 yards and 14 touchdowns) and senior quarterback Ryan McGaughey (807 yards rushing and 15 TDs) to spark an offense that averaged 40 points per league game.
Stuttgart tied Heber Springs and Lonoke for second-place in the 2-4A, but earned the No. 4 playoff seed after the tie-breaker system. "We thought this was a great playoff draw, but Stuttgart is like playing a second-place team," Brannon said. "We'll have to play more physical on defense." Stuttgart QB Zach Boleware keys the Ricebird attack with more than 2,000 all-purpose yards. Senior running back Kamario Robinson ran for 103 yards and three TDs in the first half of last week's 59-14 win over Marianna.
