HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
Pulaski Academy (Class 5A No. 1) at No. 2 Warren
Both teams must recover after heartbreaking setbacks to traditional powers last week. Pulaski Academy blew a 13-point, fourth quarter advantage in a 49-39 loss at West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade, while Warren lost to Shiloh Christian 26-25 in the final minute. These teams have split their four meetings, highlighted by Warren's 46-0 shutout victory in 2005.
Warren junior quarterback Drake Jones missed 10 days of practice after hurting his shoulder, and practiced just three days before playing against Shiloh Christian. Sophomore running back Kilay Cox ran for 306 yards against Shiloh Christian, but the youthful secondary (two sophomore safeties and a sophomore cornerback) got burned on big plays. "We know our weakness, and it's getting beat deep and on screens," Warren coach Bo Hembree said. "But we got better in practice last week."
Pulaski Academy senior QB Lawson Vassar, in his first start in two years, passed for three touchdowns last week, including two to senior receiver L.J. Wallace. But the Bruins turned the ball over three times in the fourth quarter. "They don't have much of a drop off from last season," Hembree says.
TV SHOW
Hooten's Arkansas Football airs Saturday mornings statewide at 8:30 on Fox 24 (Fayetteville/Fort Smith) and at 9:30 on KARZ 42 (Little Rock), featuring the state's top players.
