HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 9 Beebe at No. 3 Batesville
The winner gets the 5A East title and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. Beebe hasn't won a league title since 1997, while Batesville has won two in the past seven years.
Beebe has blasted six straight opponents since losing its opening three games by an average of 19 points. "We've grown up quite a bit and gained some confidence," said Badger coach John Shannon. The Badgers didn't win until upending Paragould by 46 points in Week 4. The following week they trailed at defending league champ Forrest City 27-20 in the third quarter before winning 41-33. Senior fullback Colby Taylor has rushed 188 times for 1,388 yards and 17 touchdowns in the Shannon's Dead T scheme. When teams crowd the line to focus on Taylor, either senior quarterback Scot Gowen (485 yards rushing) or junior halfback Jay Holdway (662 yards, 14 TDs) break long runs. Beebe gives up 15 points per game. Senior noseguard William Conley and senior linebacker Andrew Moran pace the Badgers with 51 tackles apiece.
Undefeated Batesville has given up just 52 points in six conference games and carries a plus-20 turnover margin into the game. Senior safety Matthew Showalter "has been our catalyst," said coach Dave King. Showalter returned a fumble 98 yards as time expired in a four-point victory at Wynne in Week 7. In last week's five-point win at Greene County Tech, he chased down a Greene County Tech running back at the 5-yard line and on third down stuffed a play at the one-foot line. Greene County Tech then missed a field goal. Sophomore running back Jordan Childress has rushed for almost 1,100 yards this season, including a 226-yard effort last week. Sophomore Darren Stigger has rushed for more than 800 yards this year, although Childress gets the bulk of the carries. Pioneer interior linemen Darius Johnson, Clint Arnold and Jacob Gillihan are crucial in slowing Beebe's rushing attack, King said.

Blytheville at FORREST CITY (2): Defending league champ Forrest City makes the playoffs for the second straight year with a victory. GREENE COUNTY TECH (8) at Paragould: Greene County Tech makes the playoffs for the second straight year with a victory. Paragould must win and get some help to the make it for the first time since 2004.
WYNNE (18) at Nettleton: Wynne has lost four straight games and is in danger of missing the playoffs for only the third time in 20 years. But the Yellowjackets could sneak in with some help. They own tiebreakers over Greene County Tech and Blytheville.

White Hall at MILLS (2) (Thurs.): The winner claims the No. 2 playoff seed, although White Hall could slip to the fourth seed (with a loss and Monticello victory over North Pulaski). SILOAM SPRINGS (8) at Morrilton: Siloam Springs can make the playoffs with a win and Greenbrier loss. A 5A West coach calls Morrilton sophomore Jamar Criswell the best player in the conference.
