HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 1 Camden Fairview at No. 2 Watson Chapel
These teams started the season with Watson Chapel ranked No. 1 and Camden Fairview No. 2. They flipped after Camden Fairview beat the Wildcats 37-36 in Week 3. Watson Chapel hasn't lost since, beating nine straight opponents by an average of 44-14. The Wildcats, in the semifinals for the third straight season, gouged Greenbrier by 24 points last week. Senior quarterback Kyle Coleman has generated more than 2,400 yards offense and scored 24 touchdowns this fall. Coleman also plays safety in the postseason, swiping an interception against Greenbrier. Senior running back Aaron Lagrone has rushed for 1,300 yards this season, including a one-yard TD plunge against Greenbrier. Seniors Sam Bass and Mitch Lane return for their third seasons at receiver. "Bass and Lane are two of the faster kids in the state," said Camden Fairview coach Buck James. "They are a very good team, and it's hard to beat even an average team twice in the same year."
Camden Fairview makes the semifinals for the second straight year. The Cardinals rallied from a 14-0 halftime deficit to beat Alma 28-21 a week ago after Xavier Davis' sparked them with an interception in the end zone late in the first half. Senior quarterback Brandon Keaton has completed 152 of 223 passes (68 percent) for 2,404 yards and 29 TDs, with just four interceptions this fall. Keaton passed for 365 yards and two scores against Alma. Camden Fairview's offense improved with Kevin Wooten's emergence late in the season. Wooten has rushed for 311 yards and three scores. Sedric Porchia (37 receptions, 575 yards and six TDs) and Derek Keaton (42 catches, 652 yards and 10 scores) pace the Cardinal receivers. "The quarterback is a precision passer and Derek Keaton and Porchia are electrifying playmakers," said Watson Chapel coach George Shelton.
Other Semifinal Game
No. 4 Greenwood at No. 3 Batesville
Greenwood makes it first trip to Batesville. These teams have played three times in the postseason, with Greenwood winning every time (24-20 in 2008, 58-42 in 2006 and 31-14 in 1998).
Greenwood has won eight straight games since losing at Siloam Springs by a TD in Week 4. The Bulldogs rallied from a 14-7 fourth-quarter deficit in last week's 20-14 triumph over Mills, advancing to the semifinals for the sixth time in seven years. Greenwood junior running back Justin Sunde has rushed for 1,281 yards and 16 touchdowns this season, but he got injured against Mills. Senior quarterback Stephen Hogan has completed 201 of 286 passes (70 percent) for 2,472 yards and 20 TDs this fall. Seth Parker paces the receivers with 40 catches for 636 yards and five scores. Senior inside linebacker Marco Vota has racked up more than 100 tackles, while Tyler Sandier has made more than 40 stops. "Their defense is physical, probably more physical than in the past," said Batesville coach Dave King. "Their linebackers are really impressive."
Batesville has won all 12 games this season, including 17-13 at Wynne in Week 7, 18-13 at Greene County Tech in Week 9 and 17-13 over Beebe in Week 10. The Pioneers boast a +30 turnover ratio. Sophomore running back Jordan Childress has rushed for more than 1,700 yards this year. Classmate Darren Stigger has rushed 180 yards the past two weeks after recovering from a groin injury. Senior Matthew Showalter paces Batesville as a receiver and a ball-hawking safety with eight interceptions. He made an interception and forced a fumble after a running back had broken free for an apparent TD in last week's 27-7 win over Monticello. Showalter returned a fumble 98 yards for the winning TD in the final minute at Wynne, and he made two game-saving tackles in the fourth quarter against Greene County Tech. Senior linebacker Justin Smithee has racked up more than 100 tackles this season. Senior defensive end Chance Rogers and safety Keaton Thacker tackle well. "They rarely get out of position on defense and never beat themselves," said Greenwood coach Rick Jones.
