HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 7 Cabot at Class 6A No. 6 Van Buren.
It's the biggest game at Van Buren in more than a decade. Van Buren, already assured a Class 6A playoff spot, hasn't won seven games in a season since 1999 when it lost in the first round of postseason at El Dorado. The Pointers outscore opponents 36.2 to 23.6 in 2010 with senior quarterback Tyler Spoon completing 63 percent of his passes for 1,741 yards and 14 touchdowns. He completed 25 of 36 passes for 321 yards in last week's 44-26 loss at Conway. Inside linebacker Marshall Newby leads Van Buren tacklers. Coach Mike Lee opened the starting place-kicker job this week after two misses (a field goal and extra point) last Friday.
Since back-to-back losses to Har-Ber (28-10) and Conway (41-7), Cabot has won four straight by a combined 130-65. Cabot covered Hooten's 1-point spread last week, beating Bryant by 14 to force a three-way tie atop the 7A Central standings. The Panthers beat North LR 14-7 in overtime two weeks ago. "Cabot is pompous," says Van Buren coach Mike Lee. "They're going to do what they do and dare you to stop them."
Van Buren's skill players can score on any defense in Class 7A but it won't get as many chances against clock-chewing Cabot. "We have to hold up on our defensive line," says Lee. "There's no guessing or stunting against Cabot. You have to anchor, pull off blocks and tackle."
Hooten's Arkansas Football TV show will feature highlights of the game at 11 a.m. Saturday on Fox 16 and KFSM TV 5.
