CORNING — Nate Jansen ran for two touchdowns, Eli Wright supplied an early score and a series of defensive stops, and Corning protected its shutout until the final snap in a 40-0 homecoming victory over Midland on Friday night.

The Bobcats scored twice in the opening quarter, took a 24-0 lead into halftime and added a touchdown in each of the final two periods. They converted all five two-point attempts while a defense led by Ty Price, Rex Shourd and Jacob Brown repeatedly put Midland behind the chains.

Wright helped set the tone before Corning’s offense touched the ball, making a third-down tackle for loss on Midland’s first possession. The ensuing punt gave the Bobcats favorable field position. Conner Legrand completed a pass to Kenden McCollum to move Corning near the goal line, and Wright finished the drive with an off-tackle touchdown run. The successful conversion made it 8-0.

Corning’s next possession stalled after penalties, including a holding call that erased an apparent Wright touchdown. Midland stopped the Bobcats on fourth down, but the visitors could not turn that stand into points. Carson Dodson intercepted a pass on the ensuing possession, setting up Jansen’s first touchdown run. Another two-point conversion stretched the lead to 16-0 with 58 seconds left in the first quarter.

The defensive front kept applying pressure in the second period. Price sacked Midland’s quarterback for a substantial loss, and Corning forced another punt. On the next scoring drive, Jackson Jett and Dodson contributed catches before McCollum caught a touchdown pass. The conversion pushed the advantage to 24-0 with 6:33 remaining in the half.

Midland threatened to generate a major swing early in the third quarter when it recovered a Corning fumble and returned the ball downfield. A penalty brought the return back, however, and the Mustangs eventually punted without scoring. Corning then turned back to Jansen, who broke consecutive runs to move the ball to the Midland 15. He finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run and added the two-point conversion, making it 32-0 before the end of the quarter.

Lane Lucas supplied the final scoring drive in the fourth. He carried repeatedly as Corning moved downfield, then scored with 7:02 remaining and ran in the two-point conversion for a 40-0 lead.

Midland kept working for a late score, but Corning’s reserves preserved the shutout. Bryson Murray made a touchdown-saving tackle near the goal line, and Phillip Nipper disrupted the next play and forced a fumble. The Mustangs retained an opportunity for one final snap with two seconds left, but their last pass fell incomplete. Corning closed the night with five touchdowns and no points allowed.
