SPRINGDALE — Reed McAllister scored two second-half touchdowns and kicked two field goals as Har-Ber pulled away from Springdale 39-16 Friday at Gerald Williams Bulldog Stadium. The Wildcats ended a two-game losing streak in the city rivalry, building a 16-0 first-quarter lead and then answering Springdale’s comeback attempt with 16 consecutive points after halftime.
Har-Ber improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the 7A-West. Springdale fell to 1-5 and 1-2. The Wildcats continued to move the ball after starting quarterback Brice Owens left in the second quarter, with Wylie Gardisser directing an offense that repeatedly found room on the perimeter.
Owens supplied the first touchdown, escaping pressure and running 20 yards to finish Har-Ber’s opening possession with 9:12 left in the first quarter. The extra point failed, but the Wildcats quickly added another score on defense. Jackson Henline intercepted Logan Hart’s screen pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. McAllister’s kick made it 13-0 at the 7:19 mark.
McAllister added a 33-yard field goal later in the quarter. Springdale finally found an answer through Albert Birge, who caught passes from both Hart and Orion Leautu on a drive that crossed into the second quarter. Sergio Zuniga finished the 10-play, 63-yard possession with a 29-yard field goal, trimming the deficit to 16-3 with 10:28 left before halftime.
Har-Ber needed one offensive snap to respond. Owens delivered a screen to Breck Roach, who worked through traffic, broke into the open and stayed just inside the sideline on a 71-yard touchdown reception. McAllister’s extra point restored the 20-point margin with 10:05 remaining.
The Bulldogs stayed within reach by stopping Har-Ber on fourth down and driving 66 yards in eight plays. Birge made two important catches, including a contested reception that set up first-and-10 at the 13. Hart then found Yandel Sanchez crossing behind the coverage for a 13-yard touchdown. Zuniga’s kick cut the lead to 23-10 with 1:31 left in the half.
Har-Ber reclaimed control immediately after the break. Roman Gomez’s kickoff return brought the Wildcats to their 44, and Gardisser connected with McAllister on a 47-yard catch-and-run to the Springdale 3. McAllister finished with a 1-yard touchdown run at 9:38. Har-Ber accepted a roughing-the-snapper penalty after a successful extra point, then failed on the replacement two-point try, leaving the score 29-10.
Jacob Elliott’s recovery of a muffed punt supplied another opportunity late in the third quarter. Logan Beck helped move the Wildcats into scoring position, and McAllister’s 32-yard field goal made it 32-10 with 1:39 remaining. McAllister added a short touchdown run with 6:19 left in the fourth, then kicked the extra point for a 39-10 lead.
Springdale drove for one final score, with Julian Jacobo contributing on the ground and Leautu making a downfield catch. Hart found Leautu again on a 1-yard fade with 32 seconds remaining. The two-point pass fell incomplete, completing a night in which Har-Ber’s early defensive score, productive screens and second-half rushing attack carried the rivalry.
