WALDRON — Karsten Schluterman ran for two touchdowns and threw a fourth-down touchdown pass to Kendrick Carr with 42 seconds remaining as Lamar defeated Waldron 30-16 Friday night.

Carr also intercepted two passes, and Jake Wyles added a fourth-quarter interception that set up another Lamar touchdown. The Warriors improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in 4A-4 play. Waldron fell to 3-4 and 0-4.

The final touchdown came after Waldron cut a 22-8 deficit to six points with 3:10 remaining. Corbin Cowell recovered the ensuing onside kick, and Whitman Storment broke a run that moved Lamar to the Waldron 13. The Bulldogs forced fourth-and-8, but Schluterman escaped pressure, rolled right and directed Carr into position for the touchdown reception. Cowell’s two-point run completed the scoring.

On a windy homecoming night, neither offense scored in the first quarter. Carr intercepted a pass on Waldron’s double-pass attempt early in the second quarter, but Lamar did not break the tie until its final touchdown drive before halftime.

The Warriors faced fourth-and-goal from the 1 when Schluterman kept the ball up the middle for a touchdown with 1:25 left in the half. An illegal-procedure penalty backed up the conversion attempt, but Schluterman completed a pass over the middle to put Lamar ahead 8-0. Kasen Humphrey sacked Austin Hudson on Waldron’s next possession, and the Bulldogs’ long field-goal attempt before halftime fell short.

Carr supplied another important catch in the third quarter, reaching up with one hand between two defenders to bring in a deep pass. Lamar finished the possession with Schluterman’s second touchdown run. Mason Sharp provided the lead block on the edge, and the Warriors led 14-0 with 6:10 remaining after their conversion attempt failed.

Waldron got back into the game after recovering a fumble following Carr’s second interception. Hayden Henry caught a fourth-and-6 pass to keep the Bulldogs’ possession alive. Jaxson Brown finished the drive with a short touchdown run with 12 seconds left in the third quarter, and Hudson ran for the conversion to make it 14-8.

Lamar’s defense supplied another answer. Cowell stopped Brown behind the line, and Wyles intercepted Hudson on the next passing play. Brailon Carr caught a pass for a first down during the ensuing possession, then scored on a run up the middle. His two-point run gave the Warriors a 22-8 lead with 8:07 remaining.

Waldron drove back downfield, with Henry’s catch moving the ball inside the 10. Brown scored his second rushing touchdown with 3:10 left, and Hudson’s conversion pass to Phisher Brown made it 22-16. The Bulldogs could not recover the onside kick, and Schluterman’s fourth-down escape and touchdown pass ended their comeback hopes.
