SHERWOOD — Sylvan Hills closed with two breakaway runs to rally past Benton, 40–35, in a back‑and‑forth 6A East thriller Friday night.

The Bears leaned on the ground game late. RB EJ Duckery slashed 51 yards to pull Sylvan Hills within 35–34, and RB Isaiah Howell (RB) delivered the winner on a 72‑yard burst with 2:02 remaining. Earlier, QB Tyler Hampton (QB/FS) powered in from the 1 and connected twice with WR Lakobe Brent (WR) on touchdown strikes, including a 69‑yarder that put the Bears up in the third quarter.

Benton answered repeatedly behind senior QB Drew Davis (QB). Davis threw an early TD to Easton Snellings (WR) and scored on keepers in the second and fourth quarters, the latter restoring a 35–28 lead with just over 10 minutes to play. Gunner Deaton (FS) punched in a pair of short scoring runs behind a surging offensive line, and Gabe Wilbur (K) was perfect on extra points. Defensively, Cordell Payne (FS/CB) jump‑started Benton with a first‑quarter interception that set up the game’s opening touchdown.

Both defenses produced timely plays—Benton’s Weston Monson (OLB/FS) broke up passes and helped stop a two‑point try, while Sylvan Hills’ front repeatedly collapsed the pocket—but the Bears’ explosive rushes late proved decisive.
