HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK

No. 7 Mayflower (8-0, 5-0) at No. 1 SALEM (8-0, 5-0)

This is shaping up as a defensive showdown in Salem. Mayflower is chasing history, allowing 28 points all season, an average of 4.0 points per game. Coach Austin Emerson’s squad is looking to close out the regular season with a defense that could rank, statistically, among the greats, perhaps the best since the 1978–1979 Pine Bluff team that gave up fewer than 3.0 points per game. Mayflower parlayed 345 total yards into 83 points last Friday night, led by Carter Smith (6-6 passing, 81 yards, 2 TD), Brody Ripee (3-3 passing, 64 yards, 2 TDs; 4-68 rushing, 2 TDs), Treyvion Williams (4-50 rushing, 1 TD) and Cameron Willis (3-50 receiving, 2 TDs). Salem’s defense allowed 61 points all year, an average of 7.6 points per game. Salem scored 78 points on Friday night, with multiple touchdowns from Jackson Taylor and Tyde Terry as the defense recorded its second shutout.

Salem edged out a 1-point victory last year, and this year’s matchup could be just as close with 2 elite defenses going head-to-head. This matchup contains the ingredients for a low-scoring battle with major implications for both the playoff picture and the 2-3A conference championship.
